Master of Cocktails - The Americano Bolognese

by Ben Ellefsen     19. May 2014 12:20

Master of Cocktails Americano Bolognese

Well hello there you. Time for another #MasterofCocktails me thinks. This week we made a twist on a classic, which is genuinely better than the real thing. We're making an 'Americano Bolognese'.

I have a real problem with 'regular' Americanos. They take one of the best drinks in the world (Camparisoda) and ruin it. This concoction, however, stands entirely on its own two feet, borrowing only the booze-ingredients from the original.

So – a quick thank you to @nuloungebar, and @MaverickDrinks for the recipe, and then straight into it.

Master of Cocktails - The Modern Cocktail No. 2

by Ben Ellefsen     28. April 2014 11:26

Master of Cocktails Modern Cocktail No 2

This week on #MasterofCocktails we're making a lesser known cocktail – the 'Modern Cocktail No. 2', taken from the superb reference tome that is The Savoy Cocktail Book.

Now – it's worth remembering that Mr Harry Craddock, the author of this book, would have had access to very different ingredients to the ones we have today. For that reason, I've (hopefully lovingly) changed a few of the quantities and in one case omitted an ingredient. I'll explain as we go.

Master of Cocktails - (1970s) Negroni

by Ben Ellefsen     14. April 2014 14:03

Master of Cocktails 1970s Negroni

This week we have a very special #MasterofCocktails as we’re indulging in some cocktail porn – or, more accurately, some utter, unrepentant cocktail filth.

We're going to be making a Negroni, but with ingredients that all come from the 1970s! Not a cheap serve this, admittedly, but it is completely, unequivocally epic so you do very much need to get involved still. Sorry.

Incognito window open? Let's get to it then...

Master of Cocktails - Bloody Mary

Master of Cocktails Bloody Mary

This week we're making a classic drink on #MasterofCocktails – a Bloody Mary. We'll get through this, and then I'll explain what you should have made instead. Clear? Good.

Now for me, when it comes to Bloody Marys, it's all about seasoning. Hence the (frankly ridiculous) list of ingredients.

What we're after is something to compliment the umami-rich flavour of tomato juice and work with the spice of the Worcestershire sauce. These are really the two key ingredients in this drink, and we're aiming to add to them.

Master of Cocktails - The Palmetto

Master of Cocktails The Palmetto

So – the clocks have changed, and we've either gained an hour, lost an hour, or gone back in time. It's unclear which... Either way, it's time for #MasterofCocktails! This week's drink is a Palmetto.

Traditionally, this drink would be made with rum, vermouth and bitters, but as we're using Rumbullion! There's no need for the bitters in this one. I'm using the Navy-Strength, as that's what's behind the bar, but you could certainly use the regular stuff. No problem either way.

Master of Cocktails - The (Original) Martinez

by Ben Ellefsen     24. March 2014 12:21

Master of Cocktails The original Martinez

This week we're re-visiting a recipe for the first time on #MasterofCocktails – The Martinez.

The reason we're doing this is that the first recipe published way back in October was the distinctly modern version. Heavy on the gin, and light on Vermouth. Today we're going back to the old-school, with a 1:1 Gin:Vermouth recipe.

Master of Cocktails - Bourbon Vanilla Shake

Master of Cocktails Bourbon Vanilla Shake

Sunday was the first day of advent, and as literally thousands of giddy adults cracked open the first window of their Drinks by the Dram Advent Calendars I wanted to make another grown-up version of a childhood favourite to go along with them.

So, we made a Bourbon Milkshake! People like milkshakes. That’s proven. This one’s incredibly straight-forward and absolutely delicious. Before we get started though, it would be crazy of me to mention the Advent Calendars without sharing this brilliant video with you, released today! See how many people you can recognise. It even includes an incredibly handsome man all tucked up in bed with some kind of wintery weather-induced malady...

Master of Cocktails - The Improved (New) Holland Gin Cocktail

by Ben Ellefsen     25. November 2013 17:28

Master of Cocktails Improved New Holland Gin Cocktail

Right then chaps, this week’s #MasterofCocktails recipe is The Improved (New) Holland Gin Cocktail. Despite what you may be thinking, this is one that whisky fans will really enjoy. We're using some top notch American ingredients here too, including the New York Distilling Company’s fantastic Chief Gowanus New-Netherland Gin as well as some Cask-Aged Whisky Bitters.

Brooklyn, you see, used to be a Dutch colony. Yep. And this gin we're using is a Holland gin (i.e. a genever), and it was made to a 19 century American recipe with the help of David Wondrich, using the New York Distilling Company's unaged, double-distilled rye whiskey. Moreover, it's bloody fantastic.

Master of Cocktails - The Fluffy Ruff

by Ben Ellefsen     18. November 2013 16:00

Master of Cocktails The Fluffy Ruff cocktail

For this week's #MasterofCocktails we're making 'fluffy ruffs'!

Whilst leafing through The Savoy Cocktail Book, I came across the Fluffy Ruffles Cocktail. Now, as you’ll no doubt know, Fluffy Ruffs are a suggestion for the Butterfield Diet Plan, so my interest was immediately piqued. Whilst working on this one I was even officially re-twat by @MrBButterfield himself! We do have a warehouse. The invitation's there Brian...

The recipe took a bit of fiddling before I was happy with it - some of the quantities and even ingredients needed changing. The final result of said tinkering is a delicious cocktail that calls for Rum, Sugar, Lime and Quinquina.

What's not to like?

Master of Cocktails - Blood and Sand

by Ben Ellefsen     11. November 2013 13:55

Master of Cocktails Blood and Sand cocktail

Whisky cocktails don’t get much more classic than the Blood and Sand, so it was inevitable that it would feature on #MasterofCocktails sooner or later. This version has, however, been thoroughly pimped with some snazzy new ingredients!

Most of the tweets I received last night went along the lines of "I need to get me some of that", almost regardless of the ingredient that was being mentioned. They were all 100% spot on too - you do indeed need these in your life as they're properly crazy-good!

Let's get amongst them.
