by Whisky Santa     19. November 2014 11:30

Free Mulled Cup Professor Cornelius Ampleforth

I've been delighted to see that you're all still getting your #WhiskySanta wishes in, either for any full bottle you fancy or for samples of World Whisky of the Year Yamazaki Sherry Cask 2013 on Twitter and Facebook. Plenty of people have been made extremely happy by having their wishes granted already, and that makes me very happy too! Now though, it's time to point you in the direction of another festive surprise from Whisky Santa...

From now until 31st December, I'll be popping a free 10cl sample of Christmas Mulled Cup in any orders that contain a bottle of one of Professor Cornelius Ampleforth's other fine spirits or liqueurs! That's enough Mulled Cup to mix with one or two bottles of fruity red wine and a little sugar for perfect Mulled Wine every single time!

Master of Cocktails - Maid in Cuba

by Ben Ellefsen     10. November 2014 10:50

Master of Cocktails Made in Cuba

Right then Ladies and Gents - time for this week's #MasterofCocktails. We're going to be making a drink I first tried a year or so ago at the Savoy, and is a drink created by the one and only @tomwalker86 for a Bacardi bartending competition, so it of course prominently features the classic rum at its core - yes, we're making a 'Maid In Cuba' recipe this week.

We were supposed to make it last week, so thanks for waiting patiently. Definitely well worth the wait, though. It's a good 'un.

Master of Cocktails - The Silver Lining

by Ben Ellefsen     27. October 2014 11:07

Master of Cocktails The Silver Lining

For this week's #MasterofCocktails, we have a Silver Lining recipe. It's a twist on a whiskey sour using Licor 43 Cuarenta y Tres, which is one of those sort of inexplicable flavours, like Vimto or Dr. Pepper. But with the added bonus of making you better at telling stories, and really good at playing pool. It's sort of chocolatey, and also sort of vanilla-y.

This drink is courtesy of Jim Meehan's PDT Cocktail Book. You should really all have this, it's a superbly curated compendium:

Master of Cocktails: The Ford Cocktail

by Ben Ellefsen     15. September 2014 09:14

Master of Cocktails Ford

Greetings ladies and gents. It's time for this week's #MasterofCocktails - we're doing a great little twist on a Wet Martini today - it's a Ford Cocktail recipe. I first encountered this a year or two ago at Burger & Lobster, and managed to find a recipe last week on diffordsguide but couldn't for the life of me find it again.

Luckily, @arranhoops and @SngleMaltWhimsy both pointed out that it was a Ford Cocktail and will shortly be receiving something nice in the post. Right then, on to the recipe.

The Affinity Cocktail & Handmade Cocktail Company 2014 Releases

by Jake Mountain     18. June 2014 14:19

The Affinity Cocktail

Cocktails galore! Not just on the blog though – these ones below will come right to your door. Not only are we bringing you Bramble Bar’s signature Affinity Cocktail as of today, but we also recently launched the 2014 vintage releases from The Handmade Cocktail Company. The latter including new additions as well as totally re-specced versions that have been improved significantly with even finer ingredients (no mean feat). These are exciting, tasty times, my friends.

First things first – Bramble Bar in Edinburgh. It’s awesome. For a while now they’ve been creating barrel-aged and bottle-aged Affinity Cocktails, which they serve at the bar in individual bottles for you to pour out yourself. (They’re pre-chilled and don’t require dilution.) We’re rather partial to a couple whenever we visit - it’s a perfect mix of Speyside single malt whisky and top quality vermouths (technically a red quinquina and a dry vermouth).

The Chivas Masters Cocktail Competition

by Master of Malt     18. June 2014 11:00

Chivas Cocktail Masters

Jake: The Chivas Masters 2014 is Chivas Regal’s first ever global cocktail competition. Within the UK, heats were held in Bristol, Oxford, London (x2), Manchester and Edinburgh, with the winners of each going through to the UK final that was held on 3rd June. The UK champion will now be heading off to New York for the grand final against ten other champs in July, the winner of which will then be announced at Tales of The Cocktail in New Orleans!

So, who’s been mixing up a storm in the UK using Chivas whisky? Well I was able to pop down to the second London heat and Mike attended the final so we’re in a pretty good position to let you know whether Britain’s got talent… (Hint: there was a lot more on show than you’d have found on ITV last month.)

Master of Cocktails - The Bramble

by Ben Ellefsen     21. April 2014 13:28

Master of Cocktails The Bramble

Happy Monday one and all, hope you're enjoying the long weekend! For this week's (conspicuously non-Easter-themed) #MasterofCocktails we made a Bramble.

This is essentially a gin sour with a lovely slug of Crème de Mûre (Blackberry Liqueur) in it - hence the name. The perfect drink for a pleasant spring evening, like this evening...

(I just touched wood so you can't blame me if it pisses it down yet again. Nope. My hands are clean.)

Ballantine's Brasil!

by Jake Mountain     11. March 2014 11:00

Ballantine's Brasil

You put the lime in the Ballantine’s, you drink 'em both together,
Put the lime in the Ballantine’s, then you feel better,
Put the lime in the Ballantine’s, drink 'em both up,
Put the lime in the Ballantine’s, and call me in the morning…

Flavoured whisky, eh? Obviously not that though. What I should say, of course, is flavoured whisky liqueurs and whisky-based spirit drinks, eh? This one’s a little different to many, however. First of all, it’s not honey flavoured (or even cherry flavoured). Secondly, it’s essentially made by actually steeping lime peel in Scotch whisky, in the cask.

Master of Cocktails - The Penicillin

by Ben Ellefsen     24. February 2014 11:27

Master of Cocktails The Penicillin

Another week's been and gone, which means it must be time for another #MasterofCocktails! This week we're making a Penicillin cocktail, created at Milk and Honey NYC by Sam Ross. Nice work Sam.

This is a Whisky sour, but is unusual, being made with a good slug of Peated Malt. Not a traditional hit in cocktails.

In this context, the peat works well with the traditional ginger, honey and lemon mix to provide further mental cues that the drink's doing you good. Delicious!

Master of Cocktails - The Aviation

by Ben Ellefsen     17. February 2014 11:13

Master of Cocktails The Aviation

Right then chaps – we’re going to be making something that’s very much en-vogue at the moment for this week’s #MasterofCocktails: an Aviation.

Essentially, this cocktail is just a gin-sour with a dab of Violet Liqueur in it, but the sum of the parts is so much more than this. Also, as it's probably one of the least sweet sours you'll come across, it can still legitimately be called an aperitif.
