Master of Cocktails - The Spiced Black Truffle Palmetto

by Ben Ellefsen     26. August 2014 10:42

Master of Cocktails The Spiced Black Truffle Palmetto

This week's drink (a day later than usual due to the bank holiday) is a twist on a Palmetto recipe, using the amazing Rumbullion! XO along with a couple of superb vermouths, and Bitter Bastards Black Truffle Bitters. The Black truffle notes add a superb, almost ethereal balance to the drink that makes it probably my favourite creation of the last few months.

It's a simple drink to make, which I'm sure will be welcome after last week's (and next week's) more prep-heavy drinks.

Our International Wine & Spirit Competition 2014 Winnings

by Sam Smith     23. July 2014 10:20

International Wine & Spirit Competition 2014

The folks here at MoM Towers aren’t going to win the World Cup anytime soon. Our team, Bitter Bastards FC, are just a few players short of a full squad and therefore wouldn’t qualify, so the German team has nothing to be worried about… Yet. We’re also not going to win Wimbledon, despite a small subset of us being pretty gosh-darn good at squash (they’re basically the same sport, one just has more passive aggressive connotations and a wall). Oscars? Probably not. Grammys? Unlikely. Nobel Peace Prize? Doubtful at best. Medals for making stunning drinks? Now you’re talking!

That’s right, that little preamble is leading up to us proudly showing off the medals our products scooped up at the prestigious International Wine & Spirits Competition 2014. We’re always immensely excited and grateful when the products we make are commended by the highly knowledgeable tasters behind these awarding bodies - it really does mean the world to us.

Master of Cocktails - The Hemingway Daiquiri

by Ben Ellefsen     14. July 2014 13:53

Master of Cocktails Hemingway Daiquiri

After a break from Daiquiris on #MasterofCocktails last week, they're back in force with probably the finest evolution of the drink – maybe with the exception of Artesian's Frozen Banana with Caviar... and I'll be having a crack at recreating that one in a few weeks' time incidentally... but this week we're going with The Hemingway Daiquiri.

He liked a drink or two did old Ernie, and this recipe is a fine legacy indeed. The theory here is essentially unchanged from the standard, only we're going to be replacing boring old sugar syrup with Maraschino. The original recipe also calls for a splidge of Grapefruit Juice. Not convinced it needs it myself but we'll stick it in anyway and you can easily omit it if you've not got grapefruits in (who does, usually?).

Master of Cocktails - The Strawberry Daiquiri

Master of Cocktails Strawberry Daiquiri

Right then y'all. It’s time once again for #MasterofCocktails. This week's drink (and next week's come to think of it), are both drinks that you *should* feel comfortable ordering if they're made correctly.

They are both pink though. Very pink.

This one (as you may have guessed) is a Strawberry Daiquiri. We're making it properly, which means no strawberry syrup, no strawberry liqueur and absolutely no sweet and sour mix. Shall we?

Master of Cocktails - The Mojito

by Ben Ellefsen     23. June 2014 12:28

Master of Cocktails Mojito

Sticking with the Daiquiri theme, we're (finally) making Mojitos this week on #MasterofCocktails. It's taken a while to get round to it, but is there a more crowd-pleasing summer drink?

Now the very first thing you're going to need to do is take a small amount of granulated sugar...

and do this with it...

Master of Cocktails - The Daiquiri

by Ben Ellefsen     16. June 2014 10:52

Master of Cocktails Daiquiri

In this week's #MasterofCocktails we’re making what is probably the most abused drink in the history of all time: The Daiquiri.

It's such a blisteringly simple drink when done correctly. Rum. Sugar. Lime. That's all.

Now, there are some variations worth lauding (we're going to do a few over the next couple of weeks), but the classic version is one that should be in everyone's repertoire.

The recipe really couldn't be simpler. Can you remember the following?

New Product – Rumbullion! XO 15yo

by Ben Ellefsen     11. June 2014 12:00

Professor Cornelius Ampleforth Rumbullion! XO 15 Years Old

It’s hard to believe, but the original Rumbullion! hasn’t even been with us for 3 years yet.

Initially launched in November 2011, and followed by a punchier Navy-Strength version late in 2012 (you’ll want to click on that one – it’s got explosives in it), it felt like high time we stepped up and produced a super-premium version.

With this in mind, development and sourcing work for this ultra-aged expression began over 2 years ago – it’s taken us this long to find a reliable source of exceptional, superbly-aged Caribbean rum that fits and compliments the flavour-profile of the original offering.

Master of Cocktails - Piña Colada

by Ben Ellefsen     5. May 2014 14:39

Master of Cocktails Pina Colada

This week's #MasterofCocktails is a bank holiday treat – Piña Coladas! Now, there are two reasonably important 'tricks' to this drink, well, one really...

The first trick is NO ICE. We're not using any in the preparation of this drink – instead we're using frozen pineapple. The second trick is to use an uber-ripe pineapple. All of the sweetness from this drink comes from the fruit. So, like I said – sort of one trick, but nevertheless.

We're also going to be weighing all the ingredients this time around, just for ease of reference.

Master of Cocktails - The Palmetto

by Ben Ellefsen     31. March 2014 12:20

Master of Cocktails The Palmetto

So – the clocks have changed, and we've either gained an hour, lost an hour, or gone back in time. It's unclear which... Either way, it's time for #MasterofCocktails! This week's drink is a Palmetto.

Traditionally, this drink would be made with rum, vermouth and bitters, but as we're using Rumbullion! There's no need for the bitters in this one. I'm using the Navy-Strength, as that's what's behind the bar, but you could certainly use the regular stuff. No problem either way.

Master of Cocktails - Mai Tai

by Ben Ellefsen     10. March 2014 12:15

Master of Cocktails Mai Tai

This week's #MasterofCocktails is an absolute doosie. We're making a Mai Tai. Probably one of the most abused and under-appreciated drinks in the world.

Now, if you've ever ordered one of these in a bar, you'll either have had a delicious variant on a Daiquiri, or a juice-laden mess that bears as much resemblance to a proper cocktail as a bottle of Hooch and an apple schnapps chaser.

Can you guess which version we're going to be making?
