Whisky Tourism

A pilgrim’s journey…

During the last bout of horrid weather, a conversation started at MoM headquarters. As we gazed out at the murky skies and the last dirty slush from the snow, we were all dreaming of a good holiday somewhere, and it really got us thinking.

One of our favourite spots in all the world is Speyside, because it’s such a beautiful area with stunning scenery. Equally compelling, if not more so: Speyside is home to most of the distilleries in Scotland! Such legends as Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, Aberlour, Macallan and Glenfarclas reside here, making it a great place to visit if you enjoy a good single malt.

Whisky, like wine, is a true product of its terroir, of its location. Speyside whisky is a great example of this with its honeyed, fruity malts acting like a tasty metaphor for the gentle climate of the region. There is none of the brazen, salt spray of the islands, none of the peat bogs of Islay, just the lush, pretty hills and streams and magnificent mountains that surround the River Spey.

After a little research and holiday planning we discovered Highlands and Islands Adventures

who offer a whisky themed mountain biking trip around Speyside. The trail follows some fabulous routes through stunning countryside, crossing the same routes the smugglers took to avoid excise men during the 1700s. After a morning’s biking, each day is completed with a beautiful dram at one of Speyside’s great distilleries.

They’ve tied the trip in with the Speyside Whisky Festival, which is a wonderful mix of single malts, vintage cars and music, definitely worth visiting.
